Selections of Quatrains (ruba'iyat), the first is from Ahli-yi Shirazi (d. 942/1535); at least some of the other quatrains are by Omar Khayyam.
The quatrains are written diagonally in the form of an "X" as well as at the top, middle, and bottom of a rectangle in which the quatrains on the "X" are placed. Ahli was a well-known but minor poet whose collected works have been published in Iran. The inside papers are red on which a realistic tupli plant has been painted.
