Series VI. Prior Political Career documents the positions Cleland held prior to becoming a U.S. senator and includes newspaper clippings, correspondence, memos, and research materials. The majority of the files relate to Cleland's service as Georgia's Secretary of State. The series also includes papers from when he was a Georgia state senator, consultant to the Senate Committee on Veteran's Affairs, and Administrator of the U.S. Veterans Administration.
