II. Photographs includes black and white and color prints and negatives. The series is organized into five subseries based on Mellichamp's writing projects, in addition to a general subjects subseries of material unattached to a particular project: A. Senators from Georgia, B. "Georgia Heritage," C. "Georgia Heritage" manuscript photographs and captions, D. Georgia Historical Marker Project, and E. General Subjects. The prints and negatives were created from original images from various archival repositories, and negatives and prints, were taken by Mellichamp herself or a photographer she hired for use in her various writing projects. B."Georgia Heritage" contains the bulk of the photographic materials. But, Mellichamp probably gathered many of the photographs located in E. General Subject as part of her research for "Georgia Heritage." These photographs remained separate from the images for "Georgia Heritage" because Mellichamp chose not to include them in the manuscript or saved them for use in other projects.
The items in this series are subdivided chronologically by writing project with Mellichamp's first book, Senators from Georgia preceding her subsequent project, "Georgia Heritage," which is further subdivided chronologically according to the pattern by which material was accumulated (rights and reproduction requests first, general images arranged by subject second, images and captions and lists of administrative notes third) followed by Georgia Historical Marker Project which is further divided alphabetically by county.
