Herman Talmadge officially declared his candidacy for U. S. Senator on May 9, 1956. He did so after awaiting word from Senator Walter George that he would not seek re-election. D. Talmadge Bowers and former Governor M. E. Thompson opposed former Governor Talmadge in the Democratic primary. There was no republican opposition during the general election. This subseries consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, mailing lists and a scrapbook. The researcher should consult other portions of the Talmadge collection, such as the Press Office Series Burson Reference files, to gain a more complete understanding of this campaign.
