Series 1: Constituent services and press files

Scope and content:

This series combines constituent services records with press releases and newsletters. The bulk of the series is composed of correspondence: issue mail, constituent letters, casework, and letters of recommendation. Some areas of particular note include negotiations between the United States and Panama over the Panama Canal; reactions to Watergate; busing; the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, unions, and other labor issues; funding for the VA hospital in Augusta, and proposals for the Richard Russell Waterway. The Issue Mail sub-series also includes a large amount of correspondence releated to the Vietnam War--protests; publication of the Pentagon Papers; the Geneva Convention; the My Lai massacre and court-martial of William Calley; and Chuck Searcy, a Vietnam veteran who became an anti-war activist in Athens, GA.

Access and use restrictions

Parent restrictions:
This collection is open for research with the exception of Series 1, sub-series J: Casework. Files in this series will be restricted for 75 years from the date of creation. Casework created in 1971 and 1972 will be reviewed for access in 2046 and 2047, respectively.
Parent terms of access:
Before material from collections at the Richard B. Russell Library may be quoted in print, or otherwise reproduced, in whole or in part, in any publication, permission must be obtained from (1) the owner of the physical property, and (2) the holder of the copyright. It is the particular responsibility of the researcher to obtain both sets of permissions. Persons wishing to quote from materials in the Russell Library collection should consult the Director.
