Abstract: The collection consists of a selection of Dr. Carlton's class notes, certificates, printed materials, and several manuscripts of his book on Plant Histology and Botany. Most are from the University of Georgia, but a few are from the Medical College of Georgia and Louisiana State University. An oversized container includes a large compliation of annotated illustrations for his book. |
William Marion Carlton was born February 7, 1912 in Ocala, Marion County, Florida. He died on November 27, 1973 in Athens, Georgia. He was a professor of botany at the University of Georgia. He had received in dotcorate from the University of Chicago before World War II, and after the conflict's conclusion, sought a professorship. Carlton decided on the University of Georgia and took the job in 1946. He and his wife had several children in the 1940s, including William Orten Carlton III, better known locally as ORT, who became well-known in Athens as an expert on music and regional history.
