Historical Note

Edna Ferguson Tate (1873-1956) was born the daughter of Daniel Wyatt and Sarah Jane Ferguson. In 1901 she married Philip May Tate and from 1902 until 1907 they lived in Calhoun, Georgia where Philip served as president of the bank. In April of 1907, after Philip sold his interest in the Calhoun Bank they moved to Fairmount, Georgia where he bought interest in the bank there. When he died in 1911, Edna Tate was elected the bank president and served in that position until 1926. Mrs. Edna Ferguson Tate was the mother of William Tate, Dean of Men, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of items concerning the Tate, Ferguson, and Byrd family history in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia (Pickens and Gordon counties). Items include: manuscript and typescript chronologies of Edna Ferguson Tate's education, children's births and family activities (dating 1873-1929); Family history typescript (of Tate, Ferguson, and Byrd); Tate family in North Carolina by William Tate, Dean of Men.
