Historical Note

James Longstreet Sibley, Jr. (1883-1929) was a professor at University of Georgia, appointed by the Phelps-Stokes Fund to organize the educational system in Liberia in 1925.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers of James L. Sibley, Jr. Included is a letter written from Java, May 11, 1907, by Sibley, addressed "My dear Aunt Mary," describing Boro Boedor, with details of the carvings (part of the letter is missing); and a typewritten diary kept by Sibley while working in Liberia under the auspices of the Phelps-Stokes Fund (from January-August, 1926). Also included is an issue of the Presbyterian Weekly (January 21, 1951), and biographical information regarding Sibley (dated 1972).
