Collection Description

Historical Note

John Hamlin Newton (1800-1889) was a businessman and manufacturer who resided in Jefferson County, Georgia until 1837 before moving to Athens, Georgia. His daughter Helen, married Henry Hull Carlton (1834-1905), a Confederate soldier, doctor, lawyer, and state senator and congressman of Athens, Georgia. Their daughter, Helen Newton Carlton married John Dagg Mell, son of University of Georgia Chancellor Patrick Hues Mell. Patrick Hues Mell, Jr. (1850-1918) was a University of Georgia alumnus and a distinguished scholar.

Scope and Content

This collection contains family photographs, cabinet and calling cards, as well as a small amount of correspondence, writing, and legal documents.
