Collection Description

Historical Note

Walter F. Mulconry was born in New Haven, Connecticut on January 11, 1924 and was a lifelong supporter of theater. In 1983, he reached out to Freddy Wittop with an idea for a retrospective show of Freddy's costume designs and sparked a friendship that lasted until Freddy's death in 2001.

Freddy Wittop was a costume designer, dancer, and college professor. He was born Frederick Wittop Koning on July 26, 1911 in the Netherlands. He apprenticed with a designer at the Brussels Opera and began his career in 1931 at Folies Bergère and other music halls in Paris. He also began a professional dance career under the name Frederico Rey at this time. Wittop would go on to design costumes for the Ice Capades, Broadway musicals, films, and nightclubs in New York City and would win the 1964 Tony Award for "Hello Dolly!". Afer retiring in 1973, Wittop held a position as an adjunct professor in the school of drama at the University of Georgia.
