Collection Description

Historical Note

Joseph P. Ruth was born in Denver, Colorado in 1894 and became a self-employed engineer under the name of the Ruth Locomotive Company. In the early 1930s, he invented and patented a mechanism that removed the toxic gases from diesel engine exhaust, allowing the engines to be used in mining and other undergound operations.

Rufus K. Reaves was a merchant in Athens and Northeast Georgia. He owned land and the Reaves Gold Mine in Rabun County, Georgia and served as mayor of Athens from 1887-1888.

This collection contains the papers of the Ruth, Paine, and Reaves families including correspodence, surveyes, maps, drawings, and records regarding Rufus K. Reaves' land and gold mine in Raburn County, Georgia and Joseph P. Ruth's mine and company, Ruth Locomotive Company, in Denver, Colorado.
