Collection Description

Historical Note

Nancy Ann Blum received degrees from the University of Illinois and the University of Georgia including a bachelor's degree in Journalism and a master's degree in Education. She went on to work at UGA's Carl Vinson Institute of Government where she managed its publications and law-related education programs. After her retirement, she wrote and edited many educational materials for the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. She compiled her puppet shows about insects into the book "Bugs@Play".

Ann married Murray Blum, a fellow student of the University of Illinois, in 1953. Murray completed his PhD in 1955, then served two years in the US Army. He would go to on become was a renown Entomologist and taught at Louisianna State University, the University of Bristol, the University of Paris, and the University of Georgia. After retiring from UGA, he and Ann helped found the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Natural History and he often collected specimens for the museum while traveling abroad.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the papers of Murray and Ann Blum including records of Murray's military service following the Korean War, correspondence from the mid-1980s through the 1990s, a copy of his PhD thesis, Ann's writings on insects and plants, photographs, and ephemera including a program for Murray's memorial service, two issues a zine published by the Research and Development Command of the US Army during the mid 1950s, and a few of Ann's reports cards from the 1940s. The largest portion of the collection is comprised of Ann's diaries which detail her day-to-day life from the 1970s through 2009.
