Historical Note

Charles Bernard Hoeven was a WWI veteran, serving as a sergeant, Company D, 350th Infantry, 88th Division, and with the Intelligence Service, First Battalion, in England and France. He later served as a US Congressman from the 8th district of Iowa from 1943-1965. For more information see Find A Grave.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of one framed Belgian lace pillow sham given by Charles B. Hoeven to his mother, Phillippena Wieland Hoeven, upon his return from France in 1919 after World War I. The pillow sham features the year "1919" embroidered with the colors of the flags of the countries that participated in WWI.
