Historical Note

John Macpherson Berrien was a lawyer, U.S. senator, and the attorney general of the United States during President Andrew Jackson's administration. Berrien County, created in south Georgia in 1856, is named for him.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two letters: dated Louisville, November 20, 1796, to George Jones, Savannah, signed John Berrien, regarding survey and purchase of land; dated Louisville, March 19, 1799, to Charles Harris, Savannah, signed John Berrien, regarding some land to be sold for taxes, and inviting Mr. and Mrs. Harris to visit. The collection also includes an explanatory note.
