Historical Note

Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883), lawyer, politician, vice president of the Confederate States of America, and Georgia Governor, born in Wilkes County, Georgia.

E. D. Rivers (1895-1967) was a two term governor of Georgia, from 1937-1941.

Paul Hamilton Hayne (1830-1886), was a poet and man of letters from Charleston, South Carolina.

Richard Reid (1896-1961) was a newspaper editor with the Augusta Chronicle, Augusta Herald, The Bulletin, and the Catholic News. He was a member of law firm Mulherin & Reid, and general counsel Catholic Press Association.
