Collection Description

Historical Note

Jack Davis (born 1924) is an award winning American cartoon artist and illustrator. He was a founding member of Mad Magazine and has illustrated his distinctive style of caricature on movie posters, book covers, advertisements, and comic books since 1952. His irreverent images celebrate a down-to-Earth quality of the people and animals he draws. As an avid fan of the football team for the University of Georgia, Davis has illustrated a number of images featuring the Georgia Bulldog in a multitude of situations over the years. His illustrations for the book covers of a number of Lewis Grizzard publications are a perfect fit for the Georgia writer's style. Lewis Grizzard (1946-1994) was a sports editor and columnist for the Atlanta Journal, who was nationally known as a speaker, performer, and writer who personified the culture of the American South with his relaxed and humorous style.

Scope and Content

This collection contains six original watercolor illustrations by Jack Davis, five are for Lewis Grizzard books, and one depicts Grizzard riding a Georgia Bulldog.
