Collection Description

Historical Note

Margo Rosenbaum attended the San Francisco Art Institute, receiving a BFA, and University of Iowa, receiving a master's in photography. She has been an active photographer for over forty years, serving as an official photographer for the Iowa Bicentennial Folk Festival and National Folk Festival at Wolf Trap Farm. Her most widely recognized work has featured images of American traditional singers and musicians, many taken during field work with her husband, artist and folklorist Art Rosenbaum. Many of these photographs were exhibited in shows at the Image Gallery (Athens, Ga.), Razor Gallery (New York City), Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Sfinks Gallery (Antwerp, Belgium), and Georgia Museum of Art (Athens, Ga.). Her photography has also been published in Fold Visions and Voices: Traditional Music and Song in North Georgia, Shout Because You're Free: The African American Ring Shout Tradition in Coastal Georgia, Mary Lomax Ballad Book: America's Great 21st Century Ballad Singer, and The Art of Field Recording: Fifty Years of Traditional American Music Documented by Art Rosenbaum. Additionally, her photographs have appeared on jackets and in liner notes of numerous LPs and CDs on several labels including Smithsonian Folkways, Flyright, and Global Village Music.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of negatives and contact sheets taken by Margo Rosenbaum during her career as a photographer from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Her images were used in two-person exhibitions with her husband Art Rosenbaum and in his publications regarding traditional American folk music. Some of the images appear in these publications: Folk Visions and Voices: Traditional Music and Song in North Georgia, Shout Because You're Free: The African American Ring Shout Tradition in Coastal Georgia, The Art of the Mountain Banjo, and Art of Field Recording: 50 Years of Traditional American Music Documented by Art Rosenbaum.
