Collection Description

Historical Note

John Thomas Mercer (1830-1864) was born in Crawfordville, Georgia to Leonidas Bennington Mercer (1804-1859) and Lovicia Janes (1811-1841). He graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point, N.Y.) in 1854. He served as Lt. Colonel in the 4th Georgia Infantry and Colonel in the 21st Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army. He was killed in action on April 18, 1864 in Plymouth, North Carolina.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a photograph of Mercer, an 1880 poem copy book, and a scrapbook started by Leonidas Mercer and finished by his son-in-law Council B. Wooten (1832-1900). The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings of speeches, letters to editors, poems, and obituaries. The oversize folder contains military commissions and diplomas.
