Collection Description

Historical Note

John Perceval (1711-1770), 2nd Earl of Egmont, was a British politician. He was the son of Arthur Jones, 2nd Viscount Ranelagh and Lady Catherine Boyle. He was educated in 1656 at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He married Hon. Elizabeth Willoughby, daughter of Elizabeth Cecil and Francis Willoughby, 5th Baron Willoughy of Parham, on 28 October 1662. His second wife was Lady Margaret Cecil, daughter of James Cecil, 3rd Earl of Salisbury and Lady Margaret Manners. They married on 9 January 1695/96. Pereceval is chiefly remembered as one of the founders of the Georgia colony.

Scope and Content

This collection contains an engraved full-length portrait of John, Earl of Egmont (Lord Perceval) with his left hand on a sword and his right elbow resting on a stack of books. Behind is a statue of of Charles I and a view of Whitehall with Fame trumpeting above.
