The collection consists of My biography by Ellen Buchanan Screven, written in 1915. The manuscript contains information on growing up in Annapolis, Maryland, the outbreak of the Civil War, social life in Mobile, Alabama, during the war, the 1876 yellow fever epidemic in Georgia, the death of her husband, raising her children alone, and the relationship between her family and the black slaves or servants.
