Historical Note

Thomas Lowndes Snead (1828-1890) was a lawyer, editor, author, and Confederate soldier.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of documents attempting to collect interest on discredited Georgia bonds dating 1871-1877. Commencing with two correspondences (March 19 and 25, 1872), one on Executive Department letterhead and the other signed by Georgia Secretary of State David G. Cotting, engaging Thomas L. Snead to act in its behalf on the matter. Of particular interest are drafts for legal documents by Snead, relating to various aspects of his work on the case, Western Union telegraphs, three from Gov. James M. Smith, instructing Snead and forwarding payment for services, and example of Snead's printed letter informing potential clients that he has completed work with the "Public debt of Georgia." The collection also includes two related newspaper clippings, and correspondence signed by E.A. Fletcher from Brunswick, Georgia, outlining various details of railroad bonds held by "J. Milbank and Pierpont Morgan."
