Collection Description

Historical Note

"1884 marked the foundation of a theatre on the site of Prince of Wales Theatre. C J Phipps was the architect of the original building. The old Prince Theatre was a three-tier auditorium featured Moorish style with white, cream and golden shades. Curtains and upholstery have strong earthy colors. Year 1937 marked the demolition of older theatre and giving way to the latest one... During 50s, theater featured a lot of variety. But, with the showcasing of The World of Suzie Wong, things started changing, as it enjoyed some great innings." -- Prince of Wales Theatre London. http://www.princeofwalestheatrelondon.info/index.html (Retrieved December 8, 2009)

Scope and Content

The collection consists of four original watercolor sketches of costumes designed for the Paris music hall. Two of the sketches are by Ladislaus Czettel (one featuring two women holding a wreath, the other featuring a man holding a crook covered in flowers) and two are by Alec Shanks (entitled Violets and Orchidees, both for the Prince of Wales Theatre).
