Collection Description

Historical Note

Groton Plantation is located in Hampton County, South Carolina, and covers nearly 23,000 acres. It was originally a slave plantation, but in 1906 by Robert Dudley Winthrop as a hunting retreat, and by the 1940s, a considerable number of people worked on farming activities there.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of three weekly time books (1942-1945) and two ledgers (1943-1946 and 1946-1951) from Groton Plantation. Time books record the hours that employees worked and their pay rates. The ledgers record the amount of money spent on various items and who purchased them; sometimes the nature of the purchases is detailed.
