Historical Note

"Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1799-1867) served on the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1846 until his death in 1867. One of three justices elected by the Georgia legislature after the supreme court's creation in 1845, Lumpkin was elected to successive terms without opposition. He was considered the chief justice of the court until officially named to that position by the legislature. An active supporter of education, he cofounded the University of Georgia law school, which now bears his name." Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence between Callie Lumpkin King, Joseph Henry Lumpkin, and other members of the Lumpkin family. Among the correspondents are Marion L. Cobb, Porter King and James Lumpkin. Also included are clippings, receipts, and writings.

While there, Sallie visits with the Cobb family, Margaret Cantey McDowell Venable, the wife of new University of Georgia professor, Charles S. Venable, and other Athens friends and has dinner with Alonzo Church, president of University of Georgia. She gives news of her husband and their two-year old daughter.
