Collection Description

Historical Note

M.A. Burnett, John James Audubon, Pierre Joseph Redoute, Wilkes, J. Gould and H.C. Richter, W. Phillips, S. Curtis, Poiteau and Turpin, Joseph Nigg, W. Curtis, and Currier and Ives were all well-known illustrators working in the 19th century. Collectively their work focuses heavily on natural history subjects, primarily plants, birds, mammals, and insects.

A brief individual biography for each illustrator or team of illustrators is available below at the series level.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of approximately 400 original color prints by a number of important 19th century naturalists. The majority of the collection comes from John James Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America and Pierre-Joseph Redoutés Les Liliacées, Les Roses and "Choix des plus Belles Fleurs," as well as several prints from M.A. Burnett's Plantae Utiliores, or Illustrations of Useful Plants, Employed in the Arts and Medicine, Part III. The collection also includes a Currier and Ives print and a handful of botanical and natural themed prints by other artists including Wilkes, Curtis, and Gould. In addition are over a dozen reference books, highlighting eight natural history reference books, many of which contain published copies of the originals in the collection.

Though the prints originate from published works, none of the works represented here have a complete set of plates. For example, in Series 3 Prints from Redoute's Les Liliaces, there are only a scant few prints from Volume 1, whereas the collection holds many more plates from Les Liliaces Volume 8, if still not all of them. In several cases there are duplicate copies of identical prints; this has been noted in the listing where it occurs.

Organization and Arrangement

Arranged into 8 series by the creator of the prints and the publication for which they were produced: Series 1. Burnett- Plant prints; Series 2. Audubon- Viviparous Quadrupeds prints; Series 3. Redoute- Les Liliaces prints; Series 4. Redoute- Les Roses prints; Series 5. Redoute-Traite des Arbres et Arbustes prints; Series 6. Redoute- Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs prints; Series 7.Other Illustrators; and Series 8. Reference Books.

Series 3. Redoute- Les Liliaces prints is divided into eight subseries by volume of the original publication, and includes subseries 3.1 through 3.8. Series 7. Other Illustrators is broken down into six subseries by illustrator name. The subseries are: 7.1 Wilkes; 7.2 Gould and Richter; 7.3 Phillips and Fardon; 7.4 Phillips; 7.5 S. Curtis; 7.6 Poiteau and Turpin. Single items included in this series are by Joseph Nigg, W. Curtis, and Currier and Ives.

2. Prints - Audubon, John James. The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America

John James Audubon (1785-1851) was born in Haiti, the son of a French sea captain and plantation owner and his French mistress. Raised by his stepmother in Nantes, France where he developed an interest in birds and a talent for drawing, he was sent to America at the age of 18. He lived on the family-owned estate at Mill Grove, near Philadelphia, where he hunted, studied and drew birds. While there, Audubon began to conduct some of the first known studies and experiments on birds.
For the next decade Audubon prospered as a businessman, eventually making his way to the frontier with his young family. He continued to draw birds as a hobby, amassing an impressive portfolio. Hard times hit and in 1819 Audubon was forced into bankruptcy. With no other options, he set off on a rugged journey to depict the birds of North America en masse. After spending the better part of a decade in the South working on his collection, in 1826 he sailed to England where his persona as "The American Woodsman" brought him instant success. His dramatic bird portraits and descriptions of wilderness life peaked much interest across the Continent. Audubon found printers in Edinburgh and London for his seminal work, Birds of America, a collection of 435 life-size prints, which is still considered a standard today.
Audubon achieved fame and a modest degree of comfort, traveled the U.S. several more times in search of birds, and settled in New York City. He made one more trip out West in 1843, the basis for his final work on mammals, the Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, which was largely completed by his sons. He died in New York at age 65 and is buried at Trinity Church.

3. Prints - Pierre Joseph Redoute, Les Liliacees. Standard folio edition

Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was a well-known Belgian painter famous for his exquisite paintings of flowers. He became a favoured artist at the court of France, patronized by kings from Louis XVI to Louis-Philippe. He was an official court artist of Queen Marie Antoinette, and he continued painting through the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. Redouté survived the turbulent political upheaval to gain international recognition for his precise renderings of plants. His delicate botanical prints were not only framed as pictures but also used for china patterns. Perhaps his most well-known works were Les Liliacées, which contained 500 plates of lilies produced from 1802-1815, and Les Roses produced from 1817-1821. Over his long career based in Paris, Redouté contributed over 2,100 published plates depicting over 1,800 different species, many never rendered before.
Les Liliacées consists of 8 volumes and 500 plates which were completed between 1802 and 1816.

355A1Currier & Ives, Little Brother and Sister
Currier and Ives was an immensely successful American printmaking firm headed by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). Based in New York City from 1834–1907, the prolific firm produced prints from paintings by fine artists as black and white lithographs that were hand colored. Much of their work is still available among historic document repositories. Unlike the illustrators in this collection, Currier and Ives did not focus on botanical or natural history themes.
