Collection Description

Historical Note

James Madison Chiles (1809-1963) was a Baptist minister. He was also a resident of Edgefield District, South Carolina and later Mitchell County, Georgia. He married Sarah Elizabeth Eyers in 1834, but she died early. He appears to have married again in 1838 to Frances A. Butler. It is suggested he died due to a disease contracted during the Civil War that he acquired while visiting his severely wounded son at a hospital.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, mostly to Chiles relating to his involvement in the Baptist Church in Abbeville and Edgefield Districts (S.C.) and in Gum Pond, Mitchell County (Ga.); printed material relating to the Edgefield Baptist Association; minutes (July 17, 1867) of the Abbeville and Edgefield Union Bible Society; Chiles' commonplace book with sermon notations; list of various women missionaries; and a speech made by Emma L. Amos before the Women's Baptist Missionary Society in Athens, Georgia.
