Collection Description

Historical Note

Ann Eliza Hatton Lewis (1903-1997) was an author, publisher, and educator. She is most notable for being the founder of Georgia Magazine. She lived for most of her adult life in Decatur and Atlanta, GA, first as an English teacher at Decatur High School and later as an administrative assistant at Georgia Tech.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, business papers, photographs, articles, scrapbooks, and newspapers all relating to her extensive career. The papers document her career as editor of the Georgia Magazine (1957-1971) and Georgia Life (1974-1980) and her involvement in the Atlanta Branch of National League of American Pen Women, Atlanta Writer's Club, and other civic and historical organizations.

2. Civic Activities

Mrs. Lewis lived in Whitmire SC after her marriage and was involved in all manner of civic activities. While president of the local Parent-Teachers Association, Founder's Day in 1936 was organized to honor Mrs. Phoebe Apperson Hurst, mother of the publisher William Randolph Hurst, who was co-founder of the lst Mother's Congress in 1897 which became the National PTA. Mrs. Hurst was the daughter of Drucilla Whitmire whose family was from Whitmire SC. The materials reflect the massive amount of organization necessary for this event.

3. Family Trips

While still living in Whitmire, SC, Mrs. Lewis determined to take her 5 children on a trip to California by car. This worked well and she later took them to the World's Fair in NYC. She wrote to several newspapers while on the trips and helped to pay some of their expenses. This material shows how she organized such and includes correspondence from readers who enjoyed the articles about the trips.

4. Editorial Activities

Mrs. Lewis was editor of the Whitmire News before the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the 1950's. She continued her editorial activities by starting GEORGIA MAGAZINE which ran until the late 1960's, was sold but did not flourish. She then started GEORGIA LIFE magazine which continued until early 1980's. The alphabetical correspondence below is from this time period.
