Historical Note

Richard Henry Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland on September 24, 1789 and died in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 10, 1847. He moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1802, engaged in mercantile pursuits, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1809. He commenced practice in Augusta, became solicitor general of the superior court of Richmond County and attorney general of Georgia (1811-1813). Wilde was elected to Congress as a Republican (1815-1817), and then again (1827-1835).

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a letter from Richard Henry Wilde to Dr. William Bacon Stevens discussing possible sources of manuscripts in Georgia history found while doing research in Italy, as well as two photographs of Wilde.
