Historical Note

The Georgia Association for Women in Education (GAWE) was founded as the Georgia Association of Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors, an affiliate of the national association, NADAC, founded in 1916. GAWE is a professional organization committed to expanding and enhancing educational opportunities, programs, and services for women in the public and private sector. Dr. M. Louise McBee served six terms in the Georgia General Assembly. Ms. McBee held several posts with the University of Georgia, including dean of women, associate dean of students, dean of students, assistant vice president for instruction, associate and senior associate vice president for academic affairs, and acting vice president for academic affairs. McBee was a Fulbright scholar and authored or co-authored numerous books and scholarly articles. She retired from the University in 1988 and moved into the next phase of her life climbing Mt. Everest and was, at the time, the oldest woman to climb higher than 18,000 feet. McBee was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives from Clarke County in 1993 and served 6 terms before retiring from the General Assembly of Georgia in 2004.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, conference materials, newsletters, minutes. All of the material is of an administrative nature and dates from minutes recorded in 1928. Included is the correspondence of several members including State Rep. Louise McBee who served as president while at the University of Georgia.
