Historical Note

William Alfred Sutton (1915- ), professor of English at Ball State University (Muncie, Ind.).

Erskine Caldwell 1903-19870 was born in White Oak, Georgia, and died in Paradise Valley, Arizona. He was an American author, most famous for his books about the South that centered on issues of poverty, racism, and social issues. He wrote God's Little Acre and Tobacco Road. He lived throughout the country, but mainly focused on the South in his writings. For more information see the article Erskine Caldwell in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers of William A. Sutton documenting his relationship with Erskine and Virginia Caldwell. Included is correspondence to and from Erskine and Virginia Caldwell as Sutton prepares to write a biography on Caldwell. The collection also contains both personal and professional information about Caldwell, a few copies of Caldwell manuscripts, and some newspaper clippings.
