Historical Note

The United Confederate Veterans was organized in 1889. John B. Gordon, soldier and politician, born in Upson County, Georgia was elected the first Commander-in-chief and served until his death in 1904.

The collection consists of records relating to the United Confederate Veterans from 1891-1906 and contains mostly correspondence among the officers of the organization concerning procedures, policies, reunions, and officers. Also included are letters of John B. Gordon, Stephen D. Lee (General commanding), William F. Mickle (Adjutant General and Chief of Staff), Thomas H. Edgar (Adjutant to Mickle), M.R.
