Historical Note

Loran Alonzo Dowling (b. 1898), soldier with the U.S. Marine Corps, served in Europe during World War I.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence of Loran Alonzo Dowling, a Marine during World War I, to his mother, Vannit Dowling. The letters were written from the Marine training camp at Paris Island (S.C.), then from France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany during his military service. The letters mainly discuss family and friends in Georgia, but also contain information on Dowling's duties as a runner carrying messages between units, trench warfare, being gassed, the people's reactions to American soldiers, and the battle of Saint-Mihiel (France) in 1918.
