Historical Note

The United Nations Association was founded in 1943 and then renamed the American Association for the United Nations (AAUN) in 1945. In 1964, the AAUN merged with the U. S. Committee for the United Nations to create a new organization known as the United Nations Association of the United States of America. ("American Association for the United Nations." Elizabeth "Betsy" Powell (1915-2013), supervisor at the University of Georgia, Division of General Extension, became the Field Representative for the AAUN in Georgia in 1951. ("UN woman attache asks backing here." The Atlanta Constitution [Atlanta] 25 Jan. 1951:3. Print.)

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondences concerning the founding of the organization in Georgia, opening and closing of the Atlanta Chapter, and educational activities and events at the University of Georgia held to promote public support for the United Nations. The collection also includes memorandums, reports, and meeting minutes. Of particular interest are correspondence signed by Eleanor Roosevelt, and Western Union wires to Elizabeth Powell from Estelle Linzer.
