Collection Description

Historical Note

A two-time U.S. presidential nominee and the only Georgian to run for the presidency prior to Jimmy Carter, [William Harris] Crawford campaigned in both 1816 and 1824. Although best known nationally for his 1824 bid for the presidency, the most controversial presidential election in U.S. history up to that point, Crawford served the state and nation in a variety of ways, including terms as a U.S. senator, cabinet member under two presidents, and foreign diplomat. His younger cousin, George W. Crawford, served as Georgia's governor in the 1840s.

For more information, see the article William Harris Crawford (1772-1834) in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

George W. Crawford, the sole Whig to serve as governor of Georgia, was elected to two terms from 1843 to 1847. Crawford also served as a Georgia state representative, state attorney general, a U.S. congressman, and the secretary of war under U.S. president Zachary Taylor. In 1861 Crawford came out of retirement to chair the state secession convention in Milledgeville.

For more information see the article George W. Crawford (1798-1872) in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a typescript detailing the genealogy of the Crawford family. The emigrant ancestor was John Crawford (circa 1600-1676). Two of the prominent Georgia descendants are Wiliam Harris Crawford (1772-1834) and George Washington Crawford (1798-1872).
