Collection Description

Historical Note

Clement A. Evans (1833-1911) was a native of Stewart County, Georgia, and, before the Civil War, judge of that county's court and a Georgia state senator. During the war he served with the Army of Northern Virginia as brigadier general and, in November 1864, as division commander and acting major general in John B. Gordon's Corps. After the war he became a Methodist minister, retiring in 1892. He served on the state board of prison commissioners, and wrote diligently about the war.

The collection consists of four letters signed "Clement A. Evans": dated Atlanta, Georgia, October 3, 1893, "Mr. Charles Edgeworth Jones," regarding Confederate history in Georgia; dated Atlanta, Georgia, May 6, 1908, "My dear Edgeworth," regarding "the annual report as the Historian of Camp 435," and the importance of Edgeworth's services; dated Atlanta, Georgia, July 16, "My dear Edgeworth," regarding the full length portrait; dated Atlanta, November 1, "My dear friend," regarding "colonial and Confederate records."
