Historical Note

Marcus Aurelius Bell (d. 1885), son of pioneer Atlanta merchant James Bell, is best remembered as the builder of the Calico House. Bell was an Elbert County native who prospered well in Atlanta real estate and law.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of various letters of Marcus Aurelius Bell and his wife Mollie (Mary Jane Hulsey Bell). Although the letters are primarily of a personal and family nature, they also reflect well the sense of the times for both people. Bell's letter of 31 October 1857 to Mollie is particularly filled with Atlanta happenings including Willis Westmoreland's ball at the Trout House. Two envelopes and one postcard accompany the four letters.

Organization and Arrangement

Arranged in chronological order.
