Collection Description

Historical Note

The Confederate States of America had struggled against the Union from 1861 to 1865 utilizing its own troops. At the war's end, with increasing distance to the conflict, Southerners looked back at what resources and losses they had faced during the war. Articles on the issue show both regions attempting to understand the war figures and leave an accurate historical record of the war.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of one volume containing newspaper clippings and typescript. The book is seventy-seven pages long, though most are blank and pages 16-24 are missing.

Several newspapers printed articles, contemplating war figures, at the war's end. The volume has several of these, including ones entitled "Resources of South in War: Comparative Strengths of the Belligerents," "The Men Who Fought for the South in 1861-1865," and "Relative Numbers." Other typed lists show the analysis more clearly. One in particular titled "Strength of the Confederate Army (At the close of the War)" details those surrendered, killed, and wounded. Slight comparisons with the Union are made. These were made in the early years after the war before reconciliation and Reconstruction.
