Historical Note

John Y. (Young) Noel born June 18, 1762 in New York city and died of yellow fever November 1, 1817 in Savannah. A lawyer, Noel was the Judge of Courts for Upper Georgia in 1789 and served as Solicitor General of Georgia in 1794. Noel was an alderman in Savannah in 1796, from 1798 to 1799, and from 1801 to 1802. Noel also served several terms as mayor of Savannah, Georgia: from 1796 to 1797 and from 1804 to 1807. In the fall of 1807, Noel was appointed Judge of the Superior Court for the Eastern District of Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a letter from John Y. Noel, Mayor of Savannah, Georgia, dated November 29, 1796, to the Chief Magistrate of New York City. The letter asks for assistance because of a great fire which broke out on September 26 and provides details as to the extent of the fire and its devastating effect. Also includes a newspaper account of the fire reprinted from the Columbian Museum on November 29, 1796.
