Historical Note

James Pleasants Waddell, the oldest son of Dr. Moses Waddell and Eliza Woodson Pleasants Waddell, was born on January 5, 1801 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1822 and returned to teach ancient languages from 1836 until 1856. Wadell married Frances (Fannie) W. Hull on October 28, 1822 and they had four children: Ann Pleasants, William Henry, Moses H., and Elizabeth. He died in Athens, Georgia on May 26, 1876.

The diary of James Pleasants Waddell with entries from September 1845-October 1847. Entries include temperature readings for morning, noon, and evening along with weather conditions and details of daily life in Athens, Georgia. Waddel discussed family, friends, University of Georgia personnel and students, what he was reading, and plantings in his garden or greenhouse.
