Collection Description

Historical Note

James Ralph Beaird (1925-2014) served as the Dean of the University of Georgia School of Law from 1976 to 1987, during which time he provided legal services to the University of Georgia. He earned a bachelors degree in business in 1949 and a bachelor of law in 1951, both from the University of Alabama, and earned a master of laws degree from George Washington University in 1951.

Beaird began his legal career as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor, and came to the University of Georgia in 1967, originally as a visiting professor. During his deanship, Beaird oversaw a great period of growth at the law school, including the establishment of the Dean Rusk Center, 21 endowed professorships, the Institute for Continuing Judicial Education, and other advancements contributing to the school's high ranking status among U.S. law schools.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of the papers of J. Ralph Beaird, primarily dating from his tenure as Dean of the School of Law at the University of Georgia (1976-1987). Records are mainly administrative files of the law school and UGA legal files.
