Historical Note

Orie Lipton Loucks was a Canadian ecologist and systems biologist born in Minden, Ontario on October 2, 1931. He studied forestry at the University of Toronto and graduated with a B.Sc. in 1953 and a M.Sc. in 1955. He later earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1960. Loucks continued teaching in academia at Wisconsin from 1962-1971, before moving to Butler University, where he taught from 1983-1989. He pressed on to instruct at Miami of Ohio from 1989-2002, before becoming emeritus. Loucks won the George Mercer Award for 1964, while serving for the Ecological Society of America (ESA).
