Collection Description

Historical Note

Marion J. Rice was a professor of education at the University of Georgia from 1956 until his retirement in 1986. He developed curriculum projects for K-12 education in anthropology and geography that were used in schools throughout the United States and in several foreign countries for many years. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Kerala, India and served as a consultant to the goverment of Indonesia.

Dr. Rice was born August 13, 1920 in Allendale, SC and grew up in Allendale as well as Savannah, Georgia. He earned his baccalaureate and master's degrees from Emory University and his doctorate from the University of Georgia. He was an officer in the Navy Supply Corpos during World War II. Afer the war he served as a Foreign Service Officer in the Department of State, with assignments in the United Kingdom Eritrea, Somalia, Libya and Morocco.

He was very active in several professional associations, including National Council for the Social Studies, National Council for Geography Education, Georgia Council for the Social Studies, Social Science Education Consortium, and Commission on Geography Education of the International Geographical Union. In 2005, the Marion and Molly Rice Endowment was established at the University of Georgia to support future graduate students in geography and anthropology education.

Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of curriculum development papers related to the University of Georgia's Anthropology Curriculum Project, which was designed to incorporate anthropology education into a K-12 school setting. Most materials related to anthropology education date from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s.
