Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteThe Committee on Gay Education (CGE) was a campus gay liberation organization at the University of Georgia, formed in 1971 by students John Hoard and Asa Green. Its founders sought to create a gathering place for gay people that could also educate the public about issues in the gay community. In March 1972, CGE won a lawsuit against the University of Georgia upholding their right to host a dance in Memorial Hall. That fall, CGE won a similar legal battle with UGA, enabling them to host the Southeast Regional Gay Coalition Conference and a dance on campus. CGE dissolved in 1983, but other advocacy groups and initiatives would develop later, including Pride Alliance (formerly Lambda Alliance) and the LGBT Resource Center. Walker Harper, the poster artist, was one of the students involved with CGE and he graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in drawing and painting in 1973.
