Collection Description

Historical Note

The Introduction to Folklore course in the University of Georgia's Department of English covered discipline of folklore, its aims, methods, and subject matter. It explored the major genres of verbal folklore--folk speech, proverbs, riddles, rhymes, legends, folktales, ballads, and folksong--along with folk customs, festivals, and material culture.

Scope and Content

This collection has transcripts of interviews and research projects conducted by students for Dr. Elissa R. Henken's "Introduction to folklore" English class. The interviews (1990-2019) were originally either tape recorded or video taped and then transcribed by the students. The transcriptions were deposited in the English Department's Folklore Archives and have now been transferred to University Archives. The varied folklore subjects range the gamut from women's issues to Demosthenian related tales of Robert Toombs.
