Historical Note

Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded at the University of Alabama on March 9, 1856 and is the only major national college fraternity that traces its origins to the Deep South. The Georgia Beta Chapter of the organization was founded on December 31, 1865 by three former Georgia Military Institute students, Samuel Spencer, George Goetchius and James McCleskey, returning from the Civil War. Upon its founding it became the first Greek letter society at the University of Georgia. Many emininent Georgians such as Richard B. Russell and Bobby Jones have been members of this chapter. Their fraternity house, the Ross Crane House located on Pulaski Street, was acquired from the Elks in 1929 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
