Historical Note

Elizabeth Hale served as chief nurse at the University Infirmary from 1924 to 1951. She was a favorite among the student body and was known affectionately as "Ma". Before coming to the University, she graduated with the first class of Athens' St. Mary's Hospital Nursing School. In 1906, while working as a nurse at St. Mary's, Hale took care of the first bedridden patient at the hospital.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of material that dates from 1911 to 2010. It includes photographs, newsclippings and articles plus a remembrance written by Elizabeth "Ma" Hale's great-niece.
