Collection Description

Historical Note

Henry Branch Howe, Jr. (1924-1998), native of Atlanta and long-time Athens resident, taught microbiology at UGA from 1957 to 1990 and served as associate dean of the Graduate School (1981-1990). Additionally, Howe served as president of the UGA Chapter of Sigma Xi, director of the State Science Fair, and president of the UGA Retired Faculty Association. A bird enthusiast, Howe participated in the Athens bird count in his spare time (1980-1998) and served on Georgia Ornithological Society Executive Committee. Prior to joining the faculty at UGA, he obtained his doctorate in genetics from the University of Wisconsin and served in the Army's 100th Infantry Division during World War II.

Scope and Content

The collection includes biographical information, correspondence, and photographs. The correspondence is primarily between Howe and other microbiologists regarding genetics and neurospora; however, there is also birding, personal, and administrative correspondence. There are a small number of applications and proposals submitted to the UGA Graduate School by various departments desiring to offer PhD programs (1962-1963). There are a number of research grant proposals (1959-1979). Also included is information and statistics from the Athens bird count (1980-1998) and Branch Howe's papers concerning the Georgia Ornithological Society with some printed material. One large photo album documents the 100th Infantry Division during World War II and Howe experience during the war. The other photo album originally belonged to Clifford Cagle (Branch Howe's mother-in-law's sister's husband) and documents UGA around 1917-1918. The UGA photographs include football and baseball games, students in World War I uniforms, buildings and scenes around campus, and student activities.
