Collection Description

Biographical/historical note

Marguerite Thomas Hodgson was the daughter of Ralph and Isabella Hodgson. She attended the Lucy Cobb School and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1946. While at the University, Hodgson was president of the Chi Omega sorority. Throughout her life, she continued to stay active with Chi Omega and served as a chapter advisor for many years. Hodgson was a talented artist who worked as an assistant to Ann Orr Morris in her gold and silversmith studio. She, also, was an avid animal lover, particularly of horses. In 2007 she endowed a gift to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine to establish a chair in equine studies. In addition, Hodgson supported many other organizations and was an associate member of the Rabun Gap Nacoochee Guild of Athens.

Scope and Content

The Marguerite Thomas Hodgson papers cover the span of 1875 to 1997. Many of the materials are related to the Chi Omega (Mu Beta chapter) fraternity. Other items are from Ms. Hodgson's college days at UGA in the mid 1940s with older materials belonging to her father, Ralph Hodgson, and other relatives. There is also a scrapbook containing clippings of an ongoing 1965 newspaper column, "Early days on the Georgia Gridiron," written by John Stegeman and Ralph Hodgson.

Organization and Arrangement

The collection is arranged into 6 series.
