Abstract: William W. Fincher served in the Georgia State Senate from 1965-1991. His committee assignments included Higher Education, Health and Welfare, Banking Finance, Appropriations, Human Resources, and Interstate Cooperation. Prior to his service in the state senate, Fincher was a pharmacist in Chatsworth, GA and operated a theaters in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. The collection consists of personal and official correspondence; constituent letters from Murray, Catoosa, and Whitfield counties; photographs; and memorabilia.

Biographical Note

William Wesley "Bill" Fincher Jr. was born on May 16, 1914 in Cherokee County, son of William Wesley Fincher Sr. and Mary Amanda Chambers Fincher. He completed pharmacy school at the University of South Carolina then followed in his father's footsteps and opened Fincher Drug Company in Chatsworth, Georgia in 1935. There he met Eunice (Peg) Loughridge and they were married in 1936. After 16 years as a pharmacist, Fincher sold his drug store and operated a chain of theathers in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. He was active in a number of local organizations in Murray and Whitfield counties and was a loyal supporter of Dalton State College. He served a trustee for DSC from 1972 to 1982 and again from 1991 to 1996.

In 1964, Fincher was elected to the 54th District of the Georgia State Senate which at that time was made up of portions of Murray, Catoosa, and Whitfield counties. He served for 26 years in the senate from 1965 to 1991. He was chairman of the Higher Education Committee and the Health and Welfare Committee. He was also a member of the Banking and Finance Committee, Appropriations Committee, Human Resources Committe, and Interstate Cooperation Committee.

He and his wife Peg had a family of three daughters and ten grandchildren. Together they founded the Fincher-Loughridge Foundation in 1985 to support colleges, churches, and youth homes in North Georgia. After leaving office Bill remained active in Murray County and in the community.

Fincher passed away on April 15, 2006 at the age of 91.

Scope and Content

The William W. Fincher Jr. papers consists of correspondence and records written by Fincher, and a collection of newspaper articles, photographs and memorabilia that was collected by Fincher during his years of service in the Georgia State Senate (1964-1990). The papers document his activities at the state capitol and in his senate district 54 that was at that time made up of portions of Murray, Catoosa, and Whitfield Counties.

The papers are divided into three series and two subseries: Series I. Office Files -Subseries A. Clippings -Subseries B. Chronological Files Series II. Photographs Series III. Memorabilia
