Collection Description

Biographical Note

Phillip Taylor Parkerson was born in Eastman, Georgia in 1946. He grew up in Southeast Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968 with an ABJ Degree and an MA in History in 1973. He completed his Ph. D. in History and Latin American Studies at the University of Florida in 1979. Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson was born in Bolivia in 1948. She attended the University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru in 1967. She took classes at the University of Florida from 1975-1976 and at Middle Georgia College from 1981-1983.

Phillip and Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson lived and worked in many different Latin American countries for over three decades. Mr. Parkerson served as a Press Attaché in Asuncion, Paraguay from 1984 to 1987, as a Cultural Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador from 1987-1991, and as a Press Attaché in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 1991-1994. He was Counselor of Public Affairs at the US Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia from 1994 until 1997. He then worked for the United States Information Agency and aided in the organizations' merger into the Department of State in 1999.

Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson served in numerous arts and outreach organizations. She received the Avis Bohlen Award from the American Foreign Service Association in 1988. The Avis Bohlen Award is given annually to a family member of a Foreign Service employee who has advanced American interests in the American and foreign communities. She was the first foreign born spouse to receive the award and was selected for the work she did in Paraguay, which included organizing and event planning for numerous cultural and charitable programs. Mrs. Crespo Parkerson worked for the US Department of State in Caracas, Venezuela as a Political and Economic Affairs Attaché from 2001-2003.

Phillip and Maria married in 1970 in La Paz, Bolivia. They have three children, Nicholas, Maria Alicia, and John. Both Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson and Phillip T. Parkerson devoted their lives and careers to diplomacy, philanthropy, and outreach in Latin America.

The Phillip T. and Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson Collection includes materials related to the diplomatic careers of Phillip T. and Maria Alicia and the philanthropic and arts work of Maria Alicia. The collection includes correspondence, press materials, family papers, and artifacts from the Parkerson family and their life in Latin America in the 1970s until the 2004.

Organization and Arrangement

The Phillip T. and Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson Collection is divided into four series: Series I. Phillip T. Parkerson Papers, Series II. Maria Alicia Crespo Parkerson Papers, Series III. Parkerson Family Papers, and Series IV. Artifacts.

It contains oversized posters and art images, framed and unframed awards, plaques, and engraved commemorative trays. The Artifacts series also includes souvenirs related to the travels of the Parkerson's over the years. This series includes materials that are signed originals.
